From the words of a tsunami survivor in Japan... "On the day of the disaster, my job as one of the community leaders was to make sure that the elderly were taken care of. I looked behind me, and there was a wall of water coming at me. I put the lady on my shoulders and started running..." - Noriko

January resolutions, winter disillusions
Sure, you made your January resolution — going to exercise, run every day (or at least three times a week), eat right and get into better condition. Ever wonder why we couldn’t all make resolutions right around April 30 — when the weather is getting nice?
Well, let’s face it, no matter what time of the year it is, weather plays a big part in what we can and cannot do when it comes to exercise. I think one of the BIGGEST lies for runners, however, is that we come to believe that there’s no (or little) health benefits to walking. I mean, walking ISN’T running.... Yeah, and...? Well, let’s put it this way, walking ISN’T running, BUT it sure beats sitting on your couch eating chips while you flip channels all afternoon...am I right?
Some days weather simply is king — whether its knee-deep snow, icy conditions, freezing temperatures, thunderstorm, dog peeing in your shoes, hail, extreme temperatures . . . okay, so the dog one may not be weather, but it would definitely cause me to pause . . . or should I say, “paws”? : ) However, the thing is, it doesn’t mean you have to be inactive. Can you get to the mall and walk, can you walk stairs at work, can you do a video exercise tape, can you get on a treadmill or elliptical machine? IF all else fails, do push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, run in place for 60 seconds (do 10 of each and repeat 5 times as quickly as you can, but with good form . . . you’ll break a sweat).
The idea is to just keep your body active, because nothing defeats a physical goal more than inactivity. Now, if you’re ill, recover first (trying to exercise too quickly, as in before you recover, can lead to a relapse and you lose more time to illness). So, if you miss a day, or even if you have to miss a week, do whatever you can to raise your heart rate and get some exercise — whether it’s running or some other form of exercise.
If it looks like it’s going to be weeks before you can run, whether due to illness or ridiculous weather, stay active (friend have a treadmill you could use?), but just move your training start back a few weeks. It’s okay. Who knows, maybe by doing some intense cross training before you start your running regime will make you a better runner? Remember, muscles utilize oxygen better, every pound of excess weight is that much more you have to carry . . . so, go ahead, get some cross training in, maybe work out a healthier diet so that when you do start running, you’re already ahead of the game (stronger, leaner and eating right).
Now, doesn’t that beat just being frustrated because of the weather? You know, bad weather could be a blessing in disguise!
Have an awesome run (or workout : ) today!
Dan
