A terrible thing to waste...

A few decades ago, the United Negro College Fund came out with this tag line: A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Funny how ads stick with you over the years....

But you know, maybe because there’s so much truth in that saying is the reason it has stuck with me so long. But that saying isn’t just about kids going to college — it’s true for other things as well . . . and especially for runners . . . as I learned again this weekend.

My three LEAST favorite times to run are when it’s windy, when it’s raining and when it’s cold (in that order...I really intensely dislike running against a strong wind). Rain is okay, but I prefer an overcast day and really don’t like it when it’s windy and rainy. Cold is fine . . . as long as it’s not (you guessed it) windy. Saturday my long run began at 4:30 a.m. It was windy (steady 15 to 20 mph) and about 34 degrees or so. At mile 6, a cold rain started coming down (hissss, boooo!). At mile 19, the rain finally stopped...leaving me drenched, my legs cold and five miles left to go (four dead into the wind) . . . BUT with a secret revealed.

This was my second consecutive weekend with a 22-mile (or more) run. I was concerned because I didn’t add a rest day before the run in preparation for it, in fact, I ran on Friday and did a short run and cross-trained on Thursday.

Now, I’m not sharing all this with you to get a reaction, but I’m telling you this because I wasn’t coming into this run well rested...and 24 miles is a big run for me. What was the difference maker for me? My mind. There were times I started feeling tired — fighting the rain, wind and chill, but then the thought occurred to me. There’s a joy in running...you enjoy this...you’re nuts, but you do...just be happy in it. That thought would make me smile (and it came to me several times when I started feeling the fatigued setting in). Then I would just envision myself several miles down the road (not the end of my run, just several miles ahead), that I could make it there and feel good when I did. And then, I was back “at” my run. The fatigue lifting as I ran on...my mind helping my body to win the battle.

For awhile when I was running, my legs began to turn red and get pretty numb from the blowing rain...and then I thought: There’s a joy in running...you enjoy this...you’re nuts, but you do...just be happy in it. It’s pretty remarkable how if you take your mind off of “minor” pain, it disappears..., but keep your mind on it, and it starts to take on a weight that drags you down physically and mentally. As once you lose the mental battle, you’re run is done.

Finally, I do have to take my hat (as wet as it was) off to my running partner James Meredith. He met me for the last 6 miles of the run (which was pretty big of him, considering the weather and him coming off an injury). We talked about the weather and whatever else for the next 5 miles, taking my MIND off the fact of how far I had run. Again, the mind, can help you and when it starts to hurt you, distract it with something else!  : ) Thanks, James! Of course, then came the last mile of the run...and James decides to see what I have left in the tank, pulling slightly ahead of me, and as I would close the gap to ALMOST his shoulder, he would pull ahead a little more. That last mile, I chased him, never quite catching him..., but that mile was over and done before I knew it...though, luckily for James, I don’t carry a taser with me when I run or else he’d have been toast!  : ) : ) But again, mile 24, my mind not thinking about mile 24 but what in the world James was trying to do to me!

So, there you have it. Although your mind can’t grant you a marathon run if you only train 5 miles a week, it surely can help you through those times when fatigue strikes . . . whether you’re going out for a short run or a long one. And when it comes time for the race, again, a strong mind — a mind that knows when it can help you overcome fatigue and when it needs to be distracted from fatigue — can make a huge difference in your performance.

Have an awesome run today!
