Dear Marathon Mission Family and Friends,

September is always a highlight for us. The air is starting to cool. Leaves change colors. If you are like me, a huge sense of anticipation permeates throughout each day.

My hat is off to all of you who are preparing for the Detroit Free Press Marathon, the Peak Performance Maine Marathon and the Outer Banks (North Carolina) Marathon this fall. Whatever your distance or race, you are a winner already. Thanks for representing Marathon Mission and God well!

Please carefully read the highlights below. There are important tips  and deadlines that will help to guide you through this exciting season. For those of you who volunteer and support Marathon Mission in other ways, you are a critical part of our team. We couldn't do this without you.

As far as our Detroit team goes, remember to mail in those Pasta/Tee forms the first week in September. All participating MM charity partners need to have a current 2010 Charity Agreement form on file, too.

MM Team in Detroit...we'll see you at the Expo, at the Pasta Supper, at the Sunrise Celebration (Charity Village) on race day, at the starting line, and at the finish line. Be sure to return to our high-fiven Marathon Mission Station in the Charity Village (just after the finish line) for kudos.

"A marathon is like life with its ups and downs, but once you've done it you feel that you can do anything."

As always, feel free to email me anytime at lisa@marathonmission.net . There's joy in this journey together!

September . . . not a very nice word!

If you’re anything like me, I look at my workout calendar and my eye almost always drifts to the toughest weeks of training, where my mileage is peaking and the long runs are REALLY long runs.

And that’s how the month of September looks when you’re training for the Detroit FreePress Marathon and other events. High mileage, long mileage, what very well may seem like “impossible” mileage.

September . . . YUCK!!

Ahhh, but think again, grasshopper!

Let me take you back to week one of your training. Yes, go look at it right now — I’ll wait . . . I SAID, I’ll wait . . . no, I’m not kidding, go look at it. Yes, now . . . .

Okay, got it? Read it off. What were your miles that week? Now, remember how you felt when you looked ahead (back then) to say, week four. Read those miles off. Yeah, that isn’t where you would want to start your training. Read week six. Now go back and read your first week again. That first week . . . pretty much “cake” for you now, right? But back when you first started . . . you likely didn’t see much frosting on that “cake” back then, am I right?

The month of September is the toughest month when it comes to training for the Detroit Marathon events. But you CAN do it. You’ve likely already done some distances you haven’t done for awhile (if ever). Nothing is really stopping you from increasing those miles EXCEPT . . . well, you. Start thinking something is impossible and soon it WILL be impossible. But unless you’re dealing with an injury or medical condition, the training is VERY possible and you’ve prepared your body to “take it on.”  : ) And just think, for some of you, you’ll be breaking new ground this month — running or walking farther than you have EVER done so before! VERY COOL!!

And just remember, in September, temperatures are going to start to cool off quite a bit as you get closer to October (compared to August, for sure). Because it’s cooler, your body will be able to perform at a higher level longer (say that fast 10 times : ). So, even if you struggle in some of your longer efforts when it’s hot, that’s okay. Cooler weather makes a WORLD of difference!

So, yes, September IS challenging, but it’s a challenge you’re ready to accept and conquer! Of course, this also means that the Detroit FreePress events are now only a handful of weeks away . . . and THEN you’ll be standing in that mass of people at the starting line, waiting for the horn to go off and then surging forward into the race — ready to do your best! It’s just so cool — it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

And speaking of never forgetting . . . have an awesome run today!

Dan
