Excerpt from Living and Loving - The Marathon of Life

By Lisa Harper

Introduction

“I want to be a writer!” For over 30 years I have hidden this dream in my heart, not knowing if it would ever come true. I write this book now because I believe it is a message worth writing and reading. Life truly is like a marathon. There are highs and lows. There are valleys and mountaintops. There is even a start and a finish.

Think about these stages of your marathon of life: inspiration, preparation, perspiration, initiation, continuation, obstruction, anticipation, and celebration. In Living and Loving – The Marathon of Life, I have tried to include a variety of real life experiences as they relate to these areas. My hope is that you can see yourself in some of them as well. How would you respond? What would you do differently? What truths can you take with you?

No matter where you are in life, reading Living and Loving – The Marathon of Life will give you opportunities to reflect on your journey and even improve certain aspects that may have been nagging you for a while.

I trust that this book will be friendly, warm and conversational. While writing each story, I pictured myself talking to you face to face. Those of you who know me well are aware that I am a positive person by nature. Although some kind of pep talk comes out on every page, I was not bashful in letting you see some of my shortcomings, too. Hopefully you will sense from me a genuine respect and connection with you, along with a dash of humor along the way. You may even get a little kick in the pants without knowing it!

“Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.” ~ Socrates

While there is a deliberate sequence of stages as they relate to the marathon of life, feel free to pick up Living and Loving and randomly read any chapter. The first chapter in each of the eight stages refers to running in some way. The remaining chapters in each stage relate to all sorts of everyday topics of interest. Whether you read this book straight through or just glance at it for five minutes, your day will be brighter for it.

Finally, my intention is that you will be motivated and encouraged by the words on these pages. As a result, through taking small, significant, intentional strides, you’ll improve your marathon of life by Living and Loving, one step at a time!
